What is VPN

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Simply put, a VPN connection is a data connection secured with encryption. Encryption takes place between your device and the VPN server you are connected to. When you are connected to an external VPN server, all traffic from your device is sent through the external server before connecting to the internet.
This sounds complicated, but it's really not that hard. To make it a little easier to understand, we use an image.

With VPN, all traffic is encrypted

Using a VPN service is becoming more and more popular. There are many reasons for this, especially since a VPN gives you many benefits. For starters, a VPN service encrypts your data traffic and helps protect your privacy online. Many people are becoming increasingly aware of the external threats that exist online and the importance of protecting personal and sensitive information.

Why use VPN?

Another reason many people use a VPN is that it can access blocked content. This is usually video content from streaming services. For example, at the time of writing you can watch SVT Play outside Sweden's borders, but with a VPN solution you can bypass geo-restrictions and watch SVT Play from abroad. Similarly, you can use a VPN service to access the American range of Netflix, which is significantly larger than the Swedish range.

Another reason many people use VPNs is to protect themselves on public Wi-Fi networks and avoid hacker attacks. Many also use VPNs to avoid government surveillance, bypass censorship in countries with limited democratic rights, and more. For example, if you are in China, you will be able to use a VPN to access Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia and other sites and websites that the government has censored and blocked.
